Идиомы или фразеологизмы – это устойчивые обороты речи, неразложимые сочетания слов, понимаемые, как правило, в переносном значении. Смысл всего выражения не определяется смыслом входящих в него слов. Часто значение идиомы трудно угадать, понять из входящих в нее слов, если вы с ней не знакомы.

Английские идиомы – живые единицы речи, их количество постоянно меняется. Некоторые идиомы живут столетиями, а другие выходят из употребления очень быстро.
Многие идиомы имеют стилистическую окраску, употребляются в неформальной речи, свойственны каким-то социальным или возрастным группам.

Нужно ли запоминать и учить идиомы?

При общении с носителями языка идиомы, то есть устойчивые обороты с фигуральным значением, вроде it rains cats and dogs (льет как из ведра), when pigs fly (когда рак на горе свистнет), встречаются редко. Ваши собеседники понимают, что английский для вас не родной язык и стараются говорить без особых трудностей.

В мультфильмах идиомы практически не встречаются (я не могу привести ни одного примера). Мультфильмы создаются из расчета, что их будут смотреть дети в оригинале (т.е. без перевода) во многих странах, где английский является вторым языком. Т.е. диалоги практически рассчитаны на иностранцев.

В фильмах, телешоу, книгах идиомы иногда встречаются, но обычно смысл угадывается по контексту.

225 идиом, которые можно посмотреть ниже (для перехода к книге - щелчок по картинке), наверное, покрывают 99% идиом, с которыми есть шанс столкнуться. Если ваш ребёнок находится на уровне, когда он может свободно (без словаря) прочитать эти простые книжечки, пусть он их прочитает. Учить, и стараться употребить эти идиомы в своей речи, абсолютно нет никакой необходимости. Но если он их услышит, или увидит в тексте, большая вероятность, что он их поймет.
